Route du Rhum: Joyon capsizes as the first day takes its toll
Francis Joyon, the 70-year-old winner of the 2018 race, turned over in the Celtic Sea on Monday, a little more than a day after the start. The organisers say he is unhurt. A rescue was set in motion with race management, France's CROSS Jobourg centre and the British authorities, and it was still in progress when the last reports of the day were filed. He was sailing his 60 ft ORMA trimaran Océans in the vintage multihull class, in about 20 to 25 knots of wind and two-metre seas. No cause has been confirmed.
Joyon has been here before: he also capsized in this race in 2002, in the Bay of Biscay, and waited several hours in his cabin for help. He had led his class overnight and into Monday morning, and Damien Seguin on Arkea – Handicap International is now in front.
At the head of the Ultims, Tom Laperche on SVR-Lazartigue had a margin of about 20 miles over Armel Le Cléac'h on Banque Populaire, with Thomas Coville on Sodebo Ultim 3 16 miles further back. Charles Caudrelier was the man moving on Monday afternoon, with Gitana 18 some four knots quicker than the leader.
Anthony Marchand's race has been interrupted. The central rudder on Actual Ultim 4 caught on something in the water and jammed, and the emergency was brought under control in under an hour. He is safe and making for Ireland at reduced speed, where a technical team was due to meet him early on Tuesday afternoon.
