Route du Rhum: a downwind start in prospect as the big boats head out
The forecast for Sunday's start has firmed up and strengthened. Meteo Consult's update on 29 October calls for a moderate north-easterly of 8 to 13 knots off the Pointe du Grouin at 13:02, gusting to around 20 knots, with only about half a metre of sea and temperatures near 14°C. Earlier in the week the outlook had been for a light northerly of 6 to 8 knots.
A strong high over France and western Europe follows storms Austen and Boelo. Further west the breeze is expected to build towards 15 to 20 knots, with 1.5 to 2 m of swell in the more exposed waters, giving the fleet a fast run along the north Breton coast towards Cap Fréhel and the tip of Brittany. High water at Saint-Malo is at 11:03, so the ebb will already be running at the gun. The 2022 race was delayed by three days because of dangerous weather offshore; forecasters see no sign of a repeat, though that decision rests with the organisers.
The Ultims are due to leave the docks this evening, with the IMOCAs, Ocean Fiftys and vintage multihulls following on Saturday and the Class40s on Sunday morning. Among the 22 IMOCAs, Francesca Clapcich makes her first solo Atlantic crossing on 11th Hour Racing; she leads the IMOCA Globe Series by 76 points from Sam Goodchild, and a top-six finish in Guadeloupe would make her the first woman to take the title. In Class40, Australian Rupert Henry is back on EORA with a new Lombard keel after structural damage ended his 2022 race early. He is the only skipper in the 49-boat class from outside Europe.
